Why Small Farms Should Sell Online

A lot of farms still take orders by text, Facebook message, or a spreadsheet. It works until it doesn't: orders get missed, pickup times get mixed up, and you spend your evenings answering the same questions. An online store fixes most of that. Here's why it's worth doing.

More people can find you and buy

At a farmers market or a roadside stand, your customers are whoever walks by. Online, anyone searching for local beef, eggs, or a CSA in your area can find you, and if you ship, you can sell well beyond your county.

You make sales while you're working

An online store takes orders at 10pm on a Tuesday while you're asleep. People shop when it's convenient for them, and you don't have to be at a booth or by your phone for the sale to happen.

Less time on admin

A good store handles the payment, sends the receipt, tracks what's left in stock, and tells the customer when and where to pick up. That's a lot of texting and spreadsheet work you get back. It also cuts down on mistakes, like double-selling the last half hog.

Better marketing, built in

Once people buy from you online, you have their email address. That means you can tell them when the next batch is ready, when CSA signups open, or when you're taking holiday orders. Most store platforms also show you what's selling, so you can plan next season with real numbers instead of guesses.

Lower costs than a storefront

You don't need a building to sell online. Platform fees are monthly and predictable, and you can start small and add features as you grow.

Easy to change

Prices go up, a product sells out, a new cut is ready. With an online store you change it in a few minutes, and customers always see what's actually available.

It builds loyal customers

Order history, simple reorder buttons, a short note after each pickup: these small touches turn one-time buyers into regulars, and regulars tell their friends.

Which platform?

It depends on how you sell. Shopify is flexible and great for shipping. Square works well if you also sell in person. Barn2Door and GrazeCart are built for farms and handle things like shares, pickup windows, and weight-based pricing. If you're not sure, that's a good thing to sort out on a free call. I'll lay out the monthly costs for each so there are no surprises.
